David Robertson fundraises for Webb family

NEW YORK — Yankees reliever David Robertson has organized a fundraiser to benefit the family of close friend and former teammate Daniel Webb, who passed away in an all-terrain-vehicle accident earlier this month.

The 28-year-old Webb was killed in Humphreys County, Tenn., on Oct. 14, when his ATV struck an object in the woods and rolled over. Three passengers, including Webb’s wife Melissa, were also injured.

The Webbs had recently been married and welcomed a newborn baby. His passing left his family with many unplanned expenses. A right-handed pitcher from Paducah, Ky., Webb had missed the 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on June 10, 2016.

“Daniel was a good friend of mine,” Robertson said. “We easily bonded over our love of the outdoors. He left this world way too young, but left us all with lasting memories. He was recently married with a brand new baby, so we started this fund to help with the overwhelming expenses that his wife has been left with.”

All donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the proceeds will be given to Webb’s widow, Melissa. More information about the fundraiser is available on Robertson’s Web site: www.highsocksforhope.com.

Robertson and Webb played together with the White Sox. Webb made 94 appearances for the White Sox from 2013-16, and he made his Major League debut at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 4, 2013. Derek Jeter was the first batter that Webb faced in the big leagues.

After Webb’s passing, the White Sox issued the following statement:

“Daniel left many friends within the Chicago White Sox organization, and we are all shocked and stunned by the news of last night’s terrible accident. He was a terrific young man with a full life ahead of him. All thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends as they deal with today’s tragic news.”
